Mexico

Go to Mexico for regional food, colonial cities, Maya ruins and beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Mexico is a large country in North America, bordered by the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south. Travelers go for regional food, museums and street food in Mexico City, markets and cooking in Oaxaca, Maya sites such as Chichén Itzá in the Yucatán, and beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Colonial towns in the central highlands, many built under Spanish rule, suit a slower pace.

Distance shapes the trip. Flights link the main regions quickly, but driving or long bus rides between them can take many hours, so two or three bases usually work better than trying to cover five. The drier months, roughly November through April, suit most regions. Hurricane season runs from June to November and matters most on the coasts. For a first visit, plan at least two weeks, and three if you want both the highlands and the coast.

Five things to know before Mexico

  1. Your length of stay is set at the border

Many passports enter visa-free, and the immigration officer decides how many days you get. Ask for what you need and check the date on your entry record. Visas and entry

  2. Use app rides or official taxis

Uber and DiDi work well in Mexico City. At the airport, buy an authorized taxi ticket inside the terminal.

  3. The altitude is real

Mexico City sits at about 2,240 m. Take the first afternoon easy and drink water. Mexico City

  4. Drink bottled or filtered water

Hotels and most restaurants use purified water and ice; tap water is not for drinking.

  5. Plan Día de Muertos early

The main days are November 1–2. Rooms in Oaxaca and Mexico City go months ahead. Día de Muertos

Rules for Mexico, checked
Check entry requirements, including whether you need Mexico's tourist form (FMM), on the official INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración) website before you travel.
Keep the entry form you receive on arrival, because you hand it back at departure.
Declare food, plants and animal products on your customs form. Some fruit, plant and meat items are restricted at the border.
Drug offences carry heavy penalties in Mexico, so never carry a bag or package for anyone else.

Mexico FAQ

How long can I stay in Mexico?

Many passports can enter visa-free as tourists, and the officer at the border decides the length of stay. Check the date on your entry record before you leave the airport.

Is Mexico City easy to get around?

The Centro Histórico, Roma, Condesa and Coyoacán are walkable by day. Use app rides at night and between neighborhoods.

When is Día de Muertos?

November 1–2, with altars and events in the days before. Mexico City also holds a large parade in the run-up, and rooms in Oaxaca fill months ahead.

When is the best time to visit Mexico?

November to April is dry across most of the country. Hurricane season runs from about June to November on the Caribbean side and from mid-May on the Pacific, and the Yucatán is hottest in April and May.

How do I travel between Mexican cities?

First-class ADO buses link most cities and are comfortable. Flights save a day on long routes such as Mexico City to Cancún or Oaxaca, and the Tren Maya serves parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.
