Doha is the capital, largest city and main financial hub of Qatar, on the Persian Gulf coast in the east of the country. Most of Qatar's population lives in the city or its suburbs, which together form the Doha Metropolitan Area. Doha became the capital in 1971, the year Qatar became independent from its status as a British protectorate.

Visitors come for the Corniche, a seafront promenade of about 7 km with views across the bay, and for Souq Waqif, a traditional market whose older buildings were restored and completed in 2008. The Museum of Islamic Art sits on an island near the old dhow harbour at one end of the Corniche. The National Museum of Qatar opened on 28 March 2019 around an early 20th-century palace. Winter is the most comfortable season for walking outdoors, with mild days and cool nights that rarely drop below 7°C. From May to September, highs often exceed 38°C. The Corniche, The Pearl and Souq Waqif can be seen in one day for a city overview.

    Doha FAQ

How many days do you need in Doha?

Two days cover the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar, Souq Waqif and the Corniche, but check the closing days first: the Islamic Art museum closes Wednesday and the National Museum closes Tuesday. Add a day for Lusail, Education City or a desert tour.

Do you need a visa for Doha?

Visit Qatar lists visa-free entry for 102 nationalities and a Hayya e-visa for others. The UK says British citizens on a full passport can get a tourist visa on arrival. Check your own passport on the visa page before you fly.

Is Doha safe to visit right now?

The UK does not advise against travel to Qatar, but it warns of Iranian strikes in the region since 8 July and of possible airspace closures. Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel. Read both pages, keep flexible bookings and check your insurance.

How do you get from Hamad Airport to central Doha?

The airport has a Metro station on the Red line, which the airport says runs 7 days a week. Taxis leave from the Taxi Pavilion at the left end of the Arrivals Hall; all airport taxis are run by Mowasalat and can be booked through the Karwa app.

Can tourists drink alcohol in Doha?

Only licensed hotels, restaurants and bars sell alcohol, and the legal drinking age is 21. Drinking or being drunk in a public place is illegal, and venues ask for original photo ID. Do not carry alcohol around with you.
