St-Barthélemy, often called St Barts, is a small volcanic island in the Leeward Islands of the northeastern Caribbean. It is a French overseas collectivity and part of the French West Indies, so French is the official language and the euro is the only official currency. The highest point, Morne de Vitet, is about 284 metres tall, and the roads are narrow, steep and winding. Gustavia, the capital and main harbor, sits in a U-shaped bay and is the island's main town for shops and restaurants.
Beaches range from calm leeward bays to Anse Toiny, which has strong currents and suits only experienced surfers. Flights usually land at Saint-Barthélemy Rémy-de-Haenen airport (SBH), and most passengers reach the island through Sint Maarten's Princess Juliana airport, while ferries run from Saint Martin. There is no public bus service, so most visitors rent a car or scooter. The climate is dry and sunny, with December to April as the drier season, and the island is busiest during the winter holiday season.
Five things to know before St-Barthélemy
- Check entry for your passport
St-Barthélemy is French territory and France sets the entry rules. UK passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 3 months; check other passports on the official France-Visas site. Visas and entry
- Fly in by small plane or take the ferry
The airport's short runway takes only small planes, mostly from Sint Maarten and Guadeloupe. Ferries also run from St Martin; the crossing can be rough.
- Rent a small car and drive carefully
Roads are steep, narrow and full of hairpins, and parking in Gustavia is tight. A small car or open-top 4x4 is easier than a large one.
- Book early for the winter holidays
Villas and hotels fill up for Christmas and New Year, often with minimum stays. Book months ahead for that period.
- Book around hurricane season
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with most storms from August to October. Many hotels and restaurants close for part of September and October. Travel insurance
