Mount Fuji, or Fuji-san, is an active volcano on Honshu, about 100 km southwest of Tokyo. At roughly 3,776 m, it is the highest mountain in Japan. It straddles Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures, with Gotemba, Fujiyoshida, Fujinomiya and Fuji as the main towns at its base. On clear days, the peak can be seen from Tokyo.
Climbers use four routes, Yoshida, Subashiri, Gotemba and Fujinomiya, during the official season from about 1 July to early September, when the huts are open. Outside that season, unprepared climbers are not allowed on the mountain. Visitors who prefer to look at the mountain from the ground can go to the Fuji Five Lakes or the towns around the base. The mountain is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and has been a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site since 22 June 2013, recognized for its religious importance and its influence on art. Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha in Fujinomiya is the main shrine.
Mt Fuji in five
- Check the climbing season firstIn 2026 the Yoshida and Subashiri trails ran from 1 July and Fujinomiya and Gotemba from 10 July, all to 10 September. Outside that window huts are shut and rescue is limited.Climbing Mount Fuji
- Pay the ¥4,000 fee and book Yoshida aheadThe 2026 fee was ¥4,000 per person on all routes. Yoshida had a cap of 4,000 climbers a day, reserved online, though it was not reached in 2024 or 2025.Trail booking and fees
- Book a hut or start after 3amTrailheads close from 2pm to 3am to anyone without a hut reservation. A hut night lets you reach the summit for sunrise and helps with altitude.
- Skip the climb and see Fuji from belowChureito Pagoda, Lake Kawaguchi and Hakone show the cone well without the season or the fee. Go on a cold, clear morning.Where to see Mt Fuji
- Base yourself at KawaguchikoThe lake town is 2 to 2.5 hours from Shinjuku and has the buses to the 5th station. One night there beats a rushed day trip from Tokyo.Fuji Five Lakes guide

When can you climb Mt Fuji in 2026?
The 2026 season ran from 1 July on the Yoshida and Subashiri trails and from 10 July on Fujinomiya and Gotemba, ending 10 September on all four. It has closed for the year. Dates for 2027 are usually announced in spring.
How much does it cost to climb Mt Fuji?
The 2026 entry fee was ¥4,000 per person on all routes. Add a hut bed, bus fare to the 5th station and coins for pay toilets. Fees have changed since 2024, so check the official site each season.
Do you need to reserve to climb Mt Fuji?
On the Yoshida trail, yes: book and pay online, since there is a cap of 4,000 climbers a day. Reservations can close early on busy dates, and you can book until 11:59pm the day before. Mountain huts are booked directly with each hut.
Can you climb Mt Fuji in a day from Tokyo?
It is possible but discouraged. Trailheads close from 2pm to 3am to anyone without a hut, so a one-day climb means starting after 3am and missing the sunrise. A hut night is safer and easier on altitude.
Is Mt Fuji worth visiting if you do not climb?
Yes. Lake Kawaguchi, Chureito Pagoda and Hakone give the best views, and the winter months are clearest. Plan an early morning and allow a spare day in case cloud hides the summit.
Can you see Mt Fuji from Tokyo?
On clear days, mostly November to February, from tall buildings and viewpoints. Summer haze and cloud usually hide it. The shinkansen window west of Tokyo shows it more reliably than the city itself.
