Port of Spain has been the capital of Trinidad and Tobago since 1757. It sits on Trinidad's northwest coast, facing the Gulf of Paria, and works mainly as a retail and administrative center with major banks. Queen's Park Savannah, about 110 hectares, is the city's largest open space. Along its west edge, the Magnificent Seven, showy late Victorian and Edwardian houses, line Maraval Road.
Downtown is the oldest part of the city, with Independence Square, The Red House and Holy Trinity Cathedral. Buildings reflect the many groups who settled here: gingerbread-style houses, New Orleans-style ironwork, Gothic cathedrals, mosques and Hindu temples. Carnival, held before Lent, is the main annual festival. The drier months run January to April, and temperatures typically stay between 19 and 34 °C year-round. Two days is enough for the Savannah, downtown and the main districts; add a day for Caroni Swamp. Violent crime and theft are common, so check the US State Department's travel advisory and choose your area with care.

Port of Spain FAQ
How many days do you need in Port of Spain?
Two days cover the heritage houses around the Queen's Park Savannah, a guided look at downtown and one trip out of town. A third day suits a National Trust heritage tour or a north coast beach day.
Is Port of Spain worth visiting?
Yes, for heritage architecture, Carnival culture and a base for the north coast, if you accept the safety trade-offs. It suits travelers who plan carefully more than those who like to wander.
Is Port of Spain safe for tourists?
The UK government reports high violent crime and names areas to be careful in. It does not advise against travel. Use trusted taxis, avoid walking at night and check the street of your hotel.
When is the best time to visit Port of Spain?
The drier months, roughly January to May, are the most comfortable. Carnival falls on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, and the commission's 2027 countdown points to 8 February 2027.
Do you need a car in Port of Spain?
No. Taxis from reputable firms cover the city, and the UK government warns of mixed driving standards, accidents on the main highways and unlit roads at night. A car is only worth it for wider trips by day.
