Caye Caulker is a limestone coral island in the Caribbean Sea, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northeast of Belize City. It is about 5 miles (8 km) long and less than 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. The main settlement, Caye Caulker Village, lies between a sheltered bay and a reef. A shallow lagoon in front of the village meets the Belize Barrier Reef to the east. The Split, a narrow waterway, divides the island and allows boats to pass between its east and west sides. High-speed water taxis and small planes serve the island.
Windsurfers use the lagoon, and the island has more than 50 hotels, along with restaurants and shops. Settlement grew after families fled massacres in the Yucatán during the Caste War of 1847. In 1961, Hurricane Hattie sent a storm surge across the narrow part of the village, destroying a wooden schoolhouse used as a shelter and killing 13 people, mostly children. Caye Caulker remains vulnerable to hurricanes: its highest point is about 8 feet (2.4 m) above sea level, and it has no storm-surge defences.

How many days do I need on Caye Caulker?
Two to four days covers a snorkel trip, a day at the Split and time to slow down. Divers often stay longer.
Does Caye Caulker have beaches?
Only a few small ones. Most swimming happens at the Split and off docks.
When is the best time to visit Caye Caulker?
The drier months from February to May bring calmer seas for snorkel trips. The storm risk is highest in September and October.
Is Caye Caulker worth it if I do not snorkel?
Yes, for a slow stay: the Split, beach bars, seafood and sunsets on the west side. Without reef trips the island is quiet by design, so two nights is plenty.
Can I swim with sharks and rays from Caye Caulker?
Snorkel tours stop at Shark Ray Alley, where nurse sharks and rays gather around the boats. Wildlife and conditions vary, so ask the operator what to expect and follow the guide's rules on touching animals.
