Belize City is Belize’s largest city, a port on the Caribbean coast and the country’s hub for air, sea and road travel. It sits at the mouth of Haulover Creek, about eight kilometres from the Caribbean Sea. The city is divided into Northside and Southside, linked by four bridges, including the Swing Bridge at Market Square. St. John’s Cathedral on Albert Street was built between 1812 and 1820. Its bricks arrived as ship ballast, and it is the only Anglican cathedral outside England where kings have been crowned.
Fort George is the city’s most colonial area. Its sights include Memorial Park, the Baron Bliss Grave and Lighthouse, and the Museum of Belize. The Bliss Institute and Maritime Museum are also in the city. Belize City began as Belize Town in 1638, founded by English logwood and mahogany cutters who shipped timber from nearby rivers and creeks. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year, with average monthly temperatures of about 24 to 28 °C (75.2 to 82.4 °F). The wet season runs from about May through February, and flooding can occur in the rainy season. March and April are the short dry season, though rain still falls.

Is Belize City safe for tourists?
UK government advice says tourists are not normally the targets of gang violence, which is most frequent south of Haulover Creek in Southside. It still advises you to follow your hotel's advice, keep valuables out of sight and use ATMs in well-lit public places or inside a bank.
Is Belize City worth visiting?
As a gateway, yes; as a destination, it is a short stop. The Museum of Belize and the waterfront suit a morning. A night makes sense for a late flight, an early boat or the museum, and the cayes, the south and Cayo hold the longer stays.
How far is the airport from the water taxi terminal?
The main water taxi operator puts the ride from Philip Goldson International Airport to its terminal at approximately 25 minutes and sells a shared transfer; ask for current rates when you book. A registered green-plate taxi is the alternative.
How do you get from Belize City to Caye Caulker?
By water taxi from the Belize Marine Terminal in about 45 minutes, or by small plane; Tropic Air lists hourly flights to Caye Caulker. Boats continue to San Pedro, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Belize City.
When is the best time to visit Belize City?
The main water taxi operator suggests late November to early or mid-April for dry days. The storm months that follow are a reason to book flexible tickets.
