Morocco

Morocco pairs walled imperial cities with Atlas Mountain valleys and the Sahara, and most trips run as a loop through all three.

Morocco is a country in North Africa, with Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts to the west and north, the Atlas Mountains running through the middle, and the Sahara to the south and east. Its imperial cities, Marrakech, Fes and Meknes among them, were capitals of successive dynasties. Their walls, gates and covered markets, called souks, are a good reason to start here. Berber (Amazigh) villages and kasbahs sit in the mountains and the south, and meals such as tagine and mint tea are served in homes and small restaurants as well as in the cities.

A loop suits most itineraries: one or two cities, a drive over the Atlas, then time in the desert or on the coast. The number of days decides how much you can cover, so with a short trip, pick one region. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for most of the country. Summer is very hot in the interior and the south, and winter is cold in the high mountains.

Five things to know before Morocco

  1. Check entry for your passport

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish passports can visit for tourism without a visa, with a 90-day limit in the official advice. Passport-validity advice differs by government, from 3 to 6 months, so carry at least 6. Visa checker

  2. Ask how far the riad is from a road

Taxis cannot reach most of the medina. Ask your riad for the nearest drivable gate, and whether someone can meet you there. Marrakech

  3. Agree prices first, not after

For guides, souk purchases and taxis without a meter, settle the price before you start. The UK government advises agreeing a fare in advance or checking the taxi uses a meter.

  4. Get dirhams in Morocco

The UK government calls the dirham a closed currency that cannot be easily exchanged outside Morocco, so plan to change or withdraw cash after you land. Declare foreign currency worth 100,000 dirham or more. Money

  5. Ramadan changes the rhythm

The UK government says Ramadan next starts in February 2027. Eating, drinking or smoking in public by day may cause offense, and opening hours change, so check ahead.

Morocco FAQ

Do I need a visa for Morocco?

Not for tourism on a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German or Spanish passport. The UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish governments all cite a 90-day limit, and the Moroccan foreign ministry lists all six as visa-exempt. Check the visa checker for your passport.

What should I wear in Morocco?

Follow local dress codes, especially in mosques, shrines and villages. The UK government advises women to consider loose-fitting clothing that covers arms, legs and chest, as women traveling alone may attract unwanted attention.

Is Ramadan a good time to visit?

It can be, with patience. The UK government notes that eating, drinking and smoking in public by day may cause offense and that hotels and restaurants serving food in fasting hours may separate you from Muslim guests. The next Ramadan starts in February 2027.

How many days do you need in Morocco?

A week fits Marrakech, Essaouira and one night in the mountains. Ten days adds Fes or the southern desert road. The Atlantic cities from Tangier to Casablanca link by high-speed train, while the Atlas and the desert need a driver or a tour.

Is Morocco safe for tourists?

Petty crime is common in tourist areas, especially medinas and beaches, and people posing as official guides harass visitors. The UK government advises using a guide with an official badge. Canada advises a high degree of caution with regional advisories, so read your own government advice.
