Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and its main business center, on the Atlantic coast. Most visitors come for the Hassan II Mosque, set beside the sea, and the city’s Art Deco and other 20th-century architecture. In the old Medina, the Ettedgui Synagogue and Ould el-Hamra Mosque stand near each other. The Corniche and Ain Diab beach are the main seafront areas for a walk. International tourism is less developed here than in Fez and Marrakesh, so Casablanca suits a short city visit, a business trip or a stop on the way elsewhere in Morocco.

The city’s main rapid transit option is the Tramway, which had four lines and 110 stops as of 2024. Mohammed V International Airport receives most of Morocco’s international flights, making Casablanca a common arrival point. Allow time for the mosque, the Medina and the downtown architecture; add the Corniche or Ain Diab if you want to spend time by the water. Casablanca has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate moderated by the cool Canary Current. It is Morocco’s largest urban area, so choose your accommodation with your planned sights and transport in mind.

Casablanca FAQ

Is Casablanca worth visiting?

Yes for one night or a layover: the Hassan II Mosque is the one must-see, and the Art Deco center and corniche fill the rest of a day. If you only have a few days in Morocco, spend them in Marrakech or Fes instead.

How many days do you need in Casablanca?

One full day covers the mosque, downtown and a seafront dinner. Add a second day only for the Habous quarter, the old medina and a beach afternoon, or as a base for Rabat.

How do you visit the Hassan II Mosque?

On a reserved guided visit. The mosque lists morning slots plus an early afternoon slot, with fewer on Fridays, and asks you to cover shoulders, chest and knees. Check the Foundation's page for current times and fees before you plan around it.

Is Casablanca safe at night?

Mostly, with normal city care. The UK government advises avoiding quiet areas after dark and not carrying valuables, and notes bag-snatching and knife thefts in major cities and on beaches. Use a taxi after dark.

How do you get from Casablanca airport to the city?

A direct train runs from Mohammed V airport to the city's rail stations, and taxis wait outside arrivals. Check the ONCF timetable for your arrival hour, and agree a taxi fare before you get in.
