Tel Aviv

Go for the Bauhaus streets, the Mediterranean beaches and the old port of Jaffa, all a short walk or ride apart.

Tel Aviv is a beach city on Israel's Mediterranean coast, founded in 1909 next to the older port of Jaffa. Its center includes the White City, a group of Modern Movement buildings with flat roofs, curved balconies and pale facades that UNESCO lists as a World Heritage site. Walk the Bauhaus streets in the morning and spend the afternoon on the sand. Jaffa, just south, has a stone old town, a flea market and views over the old harbor.

Give the city three or four days. That covers the beaches, the markets, and the cafés and restaurants of Neve Tzedek and Florentin. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking and swimming; summer is hot and humid. For the holy sites, Jerusalem is a separate trip, so plan it apart. Government travel advice for Israel changes often, so check the current UK and Canadian guidance and the entry requirements for your passport before you book.
