Toubkal National Park

Toubkal National Park is a High Atlas destination about 70 km from Marrakesh, known for the two-day climb to Jbel Toubkal and walks through mountain scenery.

Toubkal National Park lies in Morocco’s High Atlas, about 70 km from Marrakesh. Established in 1942, it covers 380 km². Jbel Toubkal, the park’s highest peak, rises to 4,167 metres, and the climb to its summit takes two days. Other peaks include Ouanoukrim at 4,089 metres, Plateau de Tazarhart at 3,995 metres and L’Aksoual at 3,910 metres. Imlil, a Berber village surrounded by mountains, is a common stop for seeing everyday mountain life.

Spring is a good time to see the park’s meadows in bloom. In autumn, cedar, oak and juniper forests turn colourful, making the season appealing for walks. The park’s ecomuseum presents its history and current sustainability and endangered-species protection projects. BirdLife International has designated Toubkal an Important Bird Area; the park has significant populations of Barbary partridges and several warbler species. Plan two days for the summit climb, or visit in spring or autumn for walks and seasonal scenery.

Toubkal National Park in five

  1. Plan the summit as a two-day climb with a guideThe tourist board says the climb takes two days with a mountain guide, with a night in a camp or shelter, and gives the summit as 4,167 meters. Start from Imlil and hire the guide in advance. How to climb Toubkal
  2. Pack for cold nights and changing weatherThe tourist board lists trekking boots, sleeping bag, gloves and jackets. Add water, sun protection and a layer for wind, because the UK government advises packing essentials for Atlas hikes.
  3. Pick your season with snow in mindThe tourist board says the Atlas peaks around Marrakech are perpetually snow-capped, and ski runs operate at Oukaimeden. Winter and early spring need extra gear and a guide who reads the conditions.Best time to climb Toubkal
  4. Decide if you need the summit at allImlil and the valleys offer shorter walks without a summit attempt. If you have only one day, a valley walk may give you more than a rushed climb.Toubkal or Imlil valley walks
