Jordan is a country in the Southern Levant of West Asia, bordered by Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel and the West Bank. Its capital and largest city is Amman. The country has a short Red Sea coast on the Gulf of Aqaba, where the port city of Aqaba lies in the southwest. The Dead Sea shore, about 420 metres below sea level, is the lowest land point on Earth. Petra, the former capital of the Nabataean kingdom, is the best-known site, and its carved facade, Al-Khazneh, is the image most people know.
Jordan suits travelers who want ancient sites, desert landscapes and time in the water on one trip. Roman Jerash, the castles at Ajloun and Karak, and the Byzantine mosaics in Madaba add history beyond Petra. Hiking is also a draw, with the 650 km Jordan Trail running north to south. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, since summers are hot and dry and winters are cool. A week covers Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and Jerash.
Five things to know before Jordan
- Buy the Jordan Pass before you fly
Bought online before arrival, the pass (JOD 70–80) waives the single-entry visa fee if you stay at least two whole nights, and covers Petra, Jerash and more than 40 other sites. The Jordan Pass explained
- Check the regional travel advice before you book
The UK advises against all travel within 3 km of the Syrian border; Canada says avoid non-essential travel. Iranian strikes have hit parts of the region, including Jordan, since 8 July. UK travel advice
- Give Petra two days, and start at opening
One day covers the Siq, the Treasury and the Monastery climb; a second adds the High Place of Sacrifice. The Jordan Pass tiers include one, two or three days at Petra. Petra
- Rent a car or book a driver for the Kings' Highway
Buses between Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum are limited. Driving the Desert Highway takes about three hours to Petra; the Kings' Highway is slower and more scenic. Getting around
- Register with the police if you stay over 14 days
Visitors who stay longer than 14 days must register at a police station and give biometrics, or pay a JOD 200 fine when they leave the country.

Jordan FAQ
Is the Jordan Pass worth it?
Almost always, if you stay at least two whole nights and visit Petra. It waives the JOD 40 visa fee, and the pass site says buyers save more than US$150 against paying separately.
How many days do I need in Jordan?
Six or seven days covers Amman and Jerash, two days in Petra, a night in Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. Add Aqaba for diving in the Red Sea.
Can I cross from Israel to Jordan?
Yes, at Sheikh Hussein in the north and Wadi Araba near Aqaba. At the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge you need a visa in advance. Visa rules differ by crossing, and crossings can close at short notice.
What should I wear in Jordan?
Clothes that cover shoulders and knees in towns and villages. Swimwear is fine at Dead Sea and Aqaba resorts, and women cover their hair to enter mosques.
When is the best time to visit Jordan?
March to May and October to November, when Petra and Wadi Rum are warm by day. Summer is very hot in the desert, and winter nights in Petra and Amman are cold.
