Wadi Rum is a desert valley of red sandstone and granite in southern Jordan, about 250 km south of Amman and an hour's drive from Aqaba. At about 720 km², it is Jordan's largest wadi, also called the Valley of the Moon for its red, moon-like rock. UNESCO has listed the protected area as a World Heritage site since 2011. Rock carvings and inscriptions, some thousands of years old, draw many visitors. Jabal Umm ad Dami, Jordan's highest peak at about 1,854 m, lies near the Saudi border.

All visitors stop at the visitor centre, which opened in 2003, and pay entry fees at the gates. Private 4x4 drivers must register there first. Most people explore with a Bedouin guide on a 4x4 tour of about two hours, following old trade caravan routes. Hotels are not allowed in the protected area, so most visitors stay in a desert camp. Rain is scarce and mostly falls in thunderstorms that can cause flash floods.

Wadi Rum FAQ

How much is the entry fee to Wadi Rum?

5 JD for foreign visitors. It is included in the Jordan Pass.

How long should I stay in Wadi Rum?

One night is enough for a jeep tour, sunset and stars. Two nights allow a longer hike or camel trek.

How do I get to Wadi Rum?

Drive or take a taxi from Aqaba, about an hour, or from Petra, about 1.5–2 hours. Camps can arrange transfers.

Do I need a guide in Wadi Rum?

Most visitors go with a camp or a licensed local guide in a 4x4, because tracks are unmarked and the sand is soft. Camps usually arrange the tour with the stay, and hikers and climbers hire guides for specific routes.

What is a Wadi Rum desert camp like?

Camps range from simple tents to sealed domes, with set dinners and breakfast. Nights are cold from November to March. Check bedding, toilets and what is included before you book, since the range between camps is wide.
