Amman is Jordan's capital and largest city, and the seat of its government and economy. It is built across hills and valleys on the East Bank Plateau, and many districts take their names from a hill (jabal) or a valley (wadi). East Amman holds most of the historic sites, while West Amman is newer, is the economic centre, and has most of the country's four- and five-star hotels.

People come for the layers of history. Ain Ghazal, on the eastern edge, is a Neolithic village whose plaster statues are among the oldest known in the world. The Ammonites made the city their capital in the Iron Age, and under Greek and Roman rule it was called Philadelphia. The Citadel hill above the old city holds Ammonite, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad remains, and the Roman Theater downtown, built in the 2nd century AD, still hosts concerts and festivals. Spring and autumn are mild, while summer is hot and busy with visitors.

Amman FAQ

How many days do I need in Amman?

One day for the Citadel, the Roman Theater and downtown, and one or two more for Jerash, Madaba and the Dead Sea.

Is the Jordan Pass worth it if I start in Amman?

Yes, if you stay two nights or more and visit Petra. It waives the tourist visa fee and covers Petra, Wadi Rum and Jerash. Buy it online before you land.

How do I get from Amman to Petra?

Buses and shared transport run south, or hire a car or driver. The Desert Highway is faster; the King's Highway is slower and more scenic. Allow about 3 to 4 hours either way.

Where should I stay in Amman?

Jabal Amman for Rainbow Street cafes and a walkable first night, downtown for budget rooms near the Roman Theater, or the western districts for quiet and easy parking. The city is hilly and spread out, so pick by evening plans.

Is Amman worth more than a stopover?

Yes, for one or two nights. The Citadel, the Roman Theater and the downtown food streets are the draw, and the city is the base for Jerash, Madaba and the Dead Sea. Most trips then continue to Petra and Wadi Rum.
