Trip cost FAQ
How does the trip cost calculator work?
Pick a destination, the number of days and travellers, then a travel style. The calculator adds a bed, food, local transport and sights for each day, per person. You can set each line on its own, or drag it to zero if you are not paying for it.
How accurate are the prices?
Each number is a typical price for an ordinary day, checked against a source and dated. Treat the total as a planning figure: prices move with the season, the city and the exchange rate.
Are flights included?
No. The estimate starts when you land. Flights, travel insurance, visas, shopping and long-distance transport are left out.
Why is the price per person sharing a double room?
Most trips are taken in pairs, so the bed line is half a double room. Travelling alone, expect to pay close to the full room at mid-range and comfort; a hostel bed costs the same either way.
Which destination is the cheapest?
At mid-range, Ethiopia at about $30 a day per person. The most expensive we price is Iceland, at about $534 a day.
What do budget, mid-range and comfort mean?
Budget: hostel beds, cheap eats, buses and free sights. Mid-range: a 3-star room, casual restaurants, public transport and one paid sight a day. Comfort: a 4-star room, good restaurants, taxis and a guided tour.
Which currency are the prices in?
The local currency of the destination, as we checked it. The calculator can show the total in your own currency at today’s exchange rate.
