Sofia is Bulgaria's capital and largest city, in the Sofia Valley at the northern foot of Vitosha mountain. The city grew around mineral and thermal springs. Roman Serdica remains are on public display in the centre, including city walls, gates, thermal baths and an amphitheatre. Sveta Nedelya Church, Banya Bashi Mosque and the Sofia Synagogue stand close together, a setting that gives the city its reputation for religious tolerance.
Two days can cover the centre, Boyana Church and a day on Vitosha. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Bulgaria's largest church, fits about 10,000 people. Boyana Church, on the city outskirts, has medieval frescoes and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Vitosha Nature Park, the oldest national park in the Balkans, covers much of the mountain and is reached by car or public transport, and two cable cars run year-round up from the city. Heat waves can push temperatures to 35 °C or more in July and August.

Sofia FAQ
How many days do you need in Sofia?
Two days cover the Serdika area, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Boyana Church and a museum or mountain block. Add a third day for Rila Monastery or Plovdiv instead of stretching the city.
Is Sofia worth visiting?
Yes for a short city break. A mosque, a synagogue, Orthodox and Catholic churches and Roman remains stand within a few blocks, and Vitosha mountain begins at the edge of town. It is a poor fit for a beach trip.
Where should you stay in Sofia?
Near Serdika or Vitosha Boulevard if you want to walk everywhere. Choose the Central Station area for rail arrivals, and Boyana only if you want quiet and accept a ride into town.
Can you visit Rila Monastery from Sofia in a day?
Yes. The tourism portal lists the monastery about 120 km south of Sofia and open to visitors from 7:00 to 20:00. Go by car, tour or shuttle, and read the Rila or Seven Lakes comparison before you pick.
When is the best time to visit Sofia?
May, June, September and October suit walking. Winters are cold, with a January average near minus 1 C on the tourism portal, and Vitosha has two ski centers. July and August are warm, with hikes best done early.
