Egypt

Egypt is known for the pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor and Aswan on the Nile, and the coral reefs of the Red Sea. Many trips combine the river with a few days on the coast.

Egypt is a country in northeast Africa, and most first-time visitors start in Cairo, a large city on the Nile. The Pyramids of Giza sit on the western edge of the city, a short drive from the center. The Egyptian Museum is downtown. Further south along the river are the temples of Luxor and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, on the west bank. Farther upstream, Aswan has ancient ruins and old granite quarries.

The Red Sea coast lies east of the Nile valley and is the place for coral reefs, snorkeling and diving. A common route pairs the river sites with a few days by the sea. This trip suits first-time visitors who want ancient history and a beach stop. Plan around the heat: October to April is the usual choice for Cairo and Luxor, while summer in the south is very hot. Allow at least a week for Cairo and the Nile, and add several days if you want the coast.

Five things to know before Egypt

  1. Check the areas to avoid before you book

The UK advises against all travel to North Sinai and within 20 km of the Libyan border, and all but essential travel to northern South Sinai inland. Luxor, Aswan and Siwa are exempt from its Western Desert warning. UK travel advice

  2. Sort the visa for your passport first

Most visitors need a visa: an e-visa online, or one bought on arrival at approved airports. Resort-only stays in Sinai have a separate entry stamp. The checker shows the rule for six passports. Visa checker

  3. Go between October and April

Summers are very hot in Luxor and Aswan. October to April is cooler, and winter is the busiest season. Best time to visit

  4. Plan the Nile line from Cairo to Aswan

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan make the classic first trip. Decide early whether you cruise between Luxor and Aswan or travel by land, and treat the Red Sea beaches as a separate leg. Luxor

  5. Carry small notes for tips

Small tips, called baksheesh, are customary for guides, drivers, tomb guards and restroom attendants. No official tipping amount is published, so keep a stack of small Egyptian pound notes. Tipping by country

Egypt FAQ

Do I need a visa for Egypt?

Most visitors do, including US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish passport holders: apply for an e-visa online at least 7 days before departure, or buy one on arrival at approved airports. Resort-only stays in Sinai have a separate stamp for some passports, so check yours in the visa checker.

How many days do I need in Egypt?

Eight to ten days covers Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, with a Nile cruise or trains between them. Add three or four days for the Red Sea.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

For most first trips, yes: a cruise between Luxor and Aswan stops at Edfu and Kom Ombo. Independent travelers can do the same by train and road.

What should I wear in Egypt?

Loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees in cities and at religious sites. Many mosques also ask women to cover their hair. Beach resorts are more relaxed.

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

Cairo, the Nile valley and the Red Sea resorts are widely visited, and the UK advice calls the southern Sinai resorts generally low risk. Governments advise against North Sinai, the Libyan border area and parts of the Western Desert, so read your own government's current advice.
