Grenada is an island country in the southeastern Caribbean, with its capital, St. George's, on the southwest coast. It is called the Spice Isle for its nutmeg, and the hilly interior grows nutmeg, mace, cocoa and cinnamon. The main island is small enough to drive across in an afternoon, though the roads are steep and winding. Traffic drives on the left. Grand Anse, a long beach a short drive from St. George's, is where most visitors head first. Offshore, the Molinière Bay underwater sculpture park draws divers and snorkelers.
Carriacou and Petite Martinique lie to the north and are part of the same country, so one trip can cover both. This suits travelers who want beaches, diving and a slower pace. The dry season, roughly December to May, is the most comfortable time to visit. Grenada sits at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, and the hurricane season runs June to November, so check forecasts before booking. Plan at least a week for the main island and one sister island. Arrival requires an online ED card, which you should complete before you fly.
Five things to know before Grenada
- Complete the online ED card
Grenada's tourism site sends visitors to the online ED card portal at edcard.gov.gd. Check the portal for the timing and for what to show at immigration and customs. Official ED card
- Base yourself near Grand Anse
Grand Anse has the long beach, easy buses into St George's and the most places to eat. The south coast around Lance aux Epines is quieter and suits sailors.
- Snorkel the underwater sculpture park
The underwater sculptures at Molinere Bay, north of St George's, sit in shallow water reached by boat. Go with a licensed operator in calm morning water.
- Take the ferry or a flight to Carriacou
Carriacou and Petite Martinique are reached by ferry or a short flight from Grenada. Check the sea forecast before the ferry; the crossing can be rough.
- Drive on the left with a local permit
Grenada drives on the left, on steep and narrow roads. You need a local driving permit, which rental firms can arrange.

Grenada FAQ
Do I need a visa for Grenada?
UK and Canadian passports do not need a visa for stays of up to 3 months. Carry a passport valid 6 months past arrival, a return or onward ticket and proof of funds, and use the online ED card portal.
When is hurricane season in Grenada?
June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August to October. Grenada is at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, but it was hit hard by Ivan in 2004 and Beryl in 2024, so take the season seriously.
Is Carriacou worth visiting?
Yes, for quiet beaches, diving and a slower pace. Plan at least two nights, as ferry and flight times do not always suit a day trip.
Why is Grenada called the Spice Isle?
It grows nutmeg, mace, cinnamon and cocoa. Spice estates and chocolate makers in the hills run tours.
How do I get around Grenada?
Numbered minibuses run from St George's across the island for low fares. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the price first.
