Torres del Paine National Park lies in the Magallanes Region of southern Chilean Patagonia. CONAF, Chile's forest agency, administers the park, which was created on 13 May 1959. Its best-known feature is the Paine massif, whose three granite towers rise about 2,500 m above sea level. Glaciers flow from the Southern Patagonia Ice Field on the western side, and lakes such as Grey and Pehoé look milky because rock flour hangs in the water.
Hikers come for the W trek, which takes about three to five days and covers about 50 miles, and for the full O circuit, which takes about seven to nine days and covers about 81 miles. Plan around the wind: the windiest months, November to January, are also the busiest. September to April is generally the best window. In winter, daylight lasts only about eight hours and most services are not practical. Campsites and refugios must be booked before you enter the park.

Torres del Paine National Park FAQ
Do I need to book Torres del Paine in advance?
Yes. Buy the entry ticket online on Pases Parques and book every campsite or refugio night before you arrive. Rangers can turn you back without bookings.
How many days is the W trek?
Most people take four or five days and four nights. The O circuit adds the back side of the massif and takes seven to nine days.
When is the best time to hike Torres del Paine?
November to March has the longest days and all services open. March and April are quieter with autumn color; January is the busiest.
Can I visit Torres del Paine on a day trip?
Yes, from Puerto Natales, with a full-day ticket. A day trip covers lakes and viewpoints, but the towers hike alone takes most of a day.
What should I pack for Torres del Paine in wind and rain?
A windproof, waterproof shell, warm layers, trekking poles and a gas stove if you camp. Weather can change within an hour, so pack for four seasons even in January. Some campsites rent tents and sleeping bags; ask when you book.
