Monteverde is a canton in Puntarenas province, in the Tilarán mountain range of Costa Rica, with Santa Elena as its head town. The area sits at about 1,400 m, and Caribbean trade winds keep it cool, with a mean annual temperature near 18 °C (64 °F). The name means 'green mountain.' American Quaker settlers founded the community around 1950, and today it is one of Costa Rica's main ecotourism destinations.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve covers about 10,500 hectares and holds around 500 orchid species, 58 amphibian species and 91 species of migratory birds. The quetzal lives there seasonally. Several other private reserves in the area also draw naturalists. Santa Elena is the main tourist hub, with hotels, restaurants and guided tours. The area is roughly three hours by road from the Central Valley, and access is difficult. Rainfall averages around 3,000 mm a year, so pack rain gear.

Which Monteverde reserve should I visit?
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the best known; the Santa Elena reserve is higher and often quieter. Either is best with a guide at dawn.
How cold is Monteverde?
Highs are usually about 20–23 °C and nights are cooler, with wind and mist. Bring a fleece and rain jacket.
How do I get from La Fortuna to Monteverde?
The jeep-boat-jeep transfer crosses Lake Arenal in about 3 hours. Driving around the lake takes about as long.
How many days do you need in Monteverde?
Two nights: a dawn guided walk and a night walk on separate days, plus time for a hanging-bridge park. A single night works only as a stop between Arenal and the coast.
Is Monteverde worth it in the rainy season?
Yes. Mist and showers come all year, and the green season brings fewer visitors, though afternoon rain is heaviest from September to November and the road up is rough. Do walks in the morning, when skies are clearest.
