Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is a high Andean lake where travelers base themselves in Puno, then head out to floating reed islands and farming islands with local families.

Lake Titicaca sits on the border of Peru and Bolivia at about 3,800 m above sea level, and it is one of the highest lakes boats can cross. Puno, on the Peruvian shore, is the usual base. From its port, boats go to the Uros, a group of islands built from floating totora reed, and to Amantani and Taquile, where Quechua and Aymara families farm and live.

Spend the first day or two in Puno to adjust to the altitude, and keep early days easy. Nights are cold all year, so pack warm layers. The dry season, roughly May to September, has clearer skies and less rain. Allow at least two or three days for Puno and a night on an island if you want a homestay. Travelers often reach Puno by road from Cusco or Arequipa, or cross from Bolivia.
