The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival guide

When it opens

Harbin has no official date for the 2026-27 season. China Highlights expects Ice and Snow World to open around 20 December 2026, and the festival's formal opening is traditionally 5 January. The park builds from ice cut from the frozen Songhua River, so the calendar follows the freeze. In 2025-26 it opened at 10am on 17 December and closed on 21 February, earlier than planned, after a mid-February warm spell.

The days to know are 31 December, when China Highlights lists fireworks, and 5 January, the formal opening. Spring Festival, the Lunar New Year, falls on 6 February in 2027, and the season ends in late February.

The sites

The festival is four places, not one, and they suit different times of day.

Ice and Snow World is the big one, on the west side of Sun Island in Songbei District, across the Songhua River from the city center. For 2025-26 it grew from 1 million to 1.2 million square meters and used more than 400,000 cubic meters of ice and snow. The blocks come from the Songhua River, because ice made in a factory has air bubbles and is too weak to carve. China Daily lists an ice slide that includes an ice-built Great Wall with walls and watchtowers, a main tower, two stages and an ice and snow parade between them.

China Highlights advises going in at about 3pm so that you see the ice in daylight and then lit, and staying no more than four hours. To avoid crowds it suggests entering before 2pm and coming back after 8pm, which needs two tickets.

Lit at night
No

The International Snow Sculpture Art Expo is on Sun Island and is a daytime visit: the sculptures are not lit at night, and China Highlights suggests arriving around 10am when the light is best. Pair it with Ice and Snow World, which is on the same island, by doing Sun Island in the morning and the ice buildings from the middle of the afternoon.

Zhaolin Park has more than 300 smaller ice lanterns and sculptures, and China Highlights describes it as aimed at children. It is in the city rather than across the river, so it is the one to fit around a late arrival or an early departure.

Central Street, Zhongyang in Chinese, is the pedestrian street in the center. Roam China Travel says it is decorated with smaller ice sculptures and lights near St. Sophia Cathedral, and that you can buy winter clothes there if you arrive underdressed. It costs nothing.

Tickets

The standard adult ticket for Ice and Snow World was 328 yuan in 2025-26, and China Daily reported that the price did not change despite the larger park. The 2026-27 price has not been published. Sun Island and Ice and Snow World charge entry; China Highlights calls both fees comparatively high.

China Highlights says the park's official online booking is open only to travelers with a Chinese resident identity card, and that holders of foreign passports can buy on arrival or send an inquiry. Roam China Travel advises booking ahead through Trip.com.

The cold

China Highlights gives a typical mid-winter range of minus 25°C to minus 10°C, before wind chill, with daytime sun feeling milder and the evenings much colder. You will be outdoors for hours on ice and snow. Roam China Travel says Central Street sells winter clothes if you arrive underdressed.

6 to 20 January and February are the quieter stretches, according to China Highlights. Early February is the exception to plan around, because Spring Festival is on 6 February in 2027.

Getting there

From Beijing, the high-speed line to Harbin West station takes 4 hours 52 minutes, down from 6 hours 32 minutes before the full line opened in January 2021. The line is 1,198 km long. China Highlights lists flying as the other route.

Harbin West is the high-speed hub, about 9 km southwest of the center, and metro Line 3 serves it. The airport, Harbin Taiping, is about 33 km from the center and has no metro line yet.

The venues are harder than the city. China Highlights advises against public transport to them, saying that buses and taxis often stop 2 to 3 km from the entrance and that taxis are hard to find afterward, and it recommends private transfers. Hotels near Central Street are about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Ice and Snow World. The visa-free list is in China visa-free entry.

Where to sleep

Central Street is the center of the city, with the pedestrian street and St. Sophia Cathedral on its doorstep. China Highlights puts it 20 to 30 minutes by car from Ice and Snow World.

Harbin West station is where the high-speed trains arrive. It is about 9 km southwest of the center, on Line 3, and suits an early train out or a late arrival.

Songbei, on the north bank of the Songhua, is the district where Ice and Snow World and Sun Island stand, so it is the nearest base to the ice and the farthest from Central Street.

What to skip

Do not visit Ice and Snow World at midday. China Highlights advises arriving about 3pm to see the ice in daylight and then lit, so give the morning to Sun Island.

Do not fix a late-February date. The park closed on 21 February in 2026 after warm weather, and its end date depends on the thaw. The stretch from the formal opening on 5 January to the end of the month is safer.
