Niagara Falls is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario, on the Niagara River between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, across from New York State. It sits in the Niagara Peninsula. The Horseshoe Falls sits on the Canadian side and can be seen from several levels of parkland along the gorge. The Niagara Parks Commission runs those parks.
A first visit usually centers on the falls: walking the gorge parks, viewing the water up close and from above, and watching the lights after dark. Summer is the busiest season. Winter brings ice formations along the gorge and fewer visitors. Toronto is about two hours away by road, so a day trip from Toronto is common, but plan at least one full day, or stay overnight if you want the evening lights. Bring a rain layer, since the spray reaches the walkways.

Niagara Falls FAQ
How many days do you need in Niagara Falls?
One day covers the brink, a boat or tunnel ride and the evening illumination. Two nights suit a slower pace, fireworks in season and a trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Is Niagara Falls worth visiting?
Yes, especially from the Canadian side, which has the closest views of the Horseshoe Falls and the nightly illumination. The commercial strips are crowded, so spend your time at the Niagara Parks sights.
How do you get from Toronto to Niagara Falls without a car?
GO Transit runs trains to Niagara Falls year-round, seven days a week, and sells a GO+WEGO combo ticket from $22. Check the timetable, since weekend and weekday trips differ.
What time are the Niagara Falls fireworks?
Niagara Parks listed nightly fireworks at 10:00 p.m. from May 15 to October 12 in 2026, free to watch from Queen Victoria Park. Shows can be cancelled in strong wind, so check ahead.
Do you need an eTA if you drive in from Buffalo?
No. Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA only to fly into Canada, not to arrive by car, bus, train or boat, and US citizens are exempt in every case. Carry your passport at the Peace Bridge or Rainbow Bridge crossings.
