Sosúa sits on a crescent bay on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, in Puerto Plata Province. People come mainly for the water: snorkeling and diving on a reef a short way off the beach. The beach strip holds the restaurants, bars and dive shops that most people use as a base. In 1940 the Dominican government allowed Jewish refugees from Europe to settle in the area, and that history is still part of the town.
Sosúa suits a beach and water trip more than a city or cultural tour. Stay on the beach strip for restaurants and dive shops, or choose Playa Alicia if you want quieter swimming. Cabarete, known for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the city of Puerto Plata are both reachable as day trips. Three days covers the bay, one reef outing and one day trip. Winter and spring are the drier months and the best time to visit. The hurricane season runs from June through November.

Sosúa FAQ
How many days do you need in Sosúa?
The Ministry of Tourism recommends two to three days. That covers the beach and near-shore reef, the Jewish Museum and a day in Cabarete or Puerto Plata.
Is Sosúa worth visiting?
Yes, for a beach town with easy snorkeling and diving, a lively evening strip and a multicultural history. It suits active travelers and friends traveling together more than travelers who want a large historic city.
When is the best time to visit Sosúa?
December to April, according to the Ministry of Tourism, which lists that as the peak and drier season. June to November is hurricane season, so book flexible rates and check your insurance.
Is it safe to walk around Sosúa at night?
Use resort-town care. The UK government advises against walking alone at night and against leaving drinks unattended, and says bag-snatching by thieves on motorcycles happens. Take licensed taxis after dark.
Do you need a car in Sosúa?
No. The beach strip is walkable and taxis cover Cabarete and Puerto Plata. The UK government warns of frequent road accidents, so a car adds risk and cost unless you plan wide coastal trips.
