Negril is a beach town on Jamaica’s southwestern coast, mainly in Westmoreland Parish, about 80.8 km southwest of Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Its long white-sand beach is often called Seven Mile Beach and has two sections: Bloody Bay to the north and Long Bay to the south. Bloody Bay has large all-inclusive resorts. Long Bay has all-inclusive hotels and smaller, family-run hotels. Most shops and vendors are at the beach’s south end, where there are fewer all-inclusive resorts.

South of downtown, West End Road, also called Lighthouse Road, passes resorts and cliffs where the water is used for snorkelling and diving. Jumping points at the cliffs are more than 12 m high. A Belgian-engineered lighthouse stands at the western tip and offers views. Inland, the Great Morass wetlands include the Royal Palm Reserve. Protected reef areas in Negril Marine Park are popular for snorkelling and scuba diving. Choose the north for large all-inclusive resorts, Long Bay for a mix of resort and family-run stays, or the West End for cliffside resorts and access to the water.

Negril in five

  1. Check your booking after Hurricane MelissaThe hurricane hit western Jamaica hard in October 2025. Most areas have been rebuilding since; confirm that your hotel, tours and roads are open before you travel.
  2. Pick beach or cliffs for your roomSeven Mile Beach has sand and calm water for swimming. The West End has cliffs, ladders into deep clear water and the best sunsets, but no beach.
  3. Check the water before cliff jumpingJump only where depth is known and ladders lead back out. Currents and rocks vary between spots, and alcohol and cliffs do not mix.
  4. Plan the airport rideNegril is about 1.5 hours by road from Montego Bay airport. Book a transfer or a licensed taxi with red PP plates.

Negril FAQ

Is Negril better than Montego Bay?

For beach time and a slower pace, many travelers prefer Negril. Montego Bay is closer to the airport and has more resorts and day trips.

How far is Negril from Montego Bay airport?

About 1.5 hours by road along the north coast highway.

Has Negril recovered from Hurricane Melissa?

Rebuilding has been under way since the storm in October 2025. Check directly with your hotel and tour operators about what is open for your dates.

Is Negril safe for tourists?

Resorts and the main beach strip are busy and well used by visitors. Beach vendors can be persistent; a polite no is usually enough. Use licensed taxis after dark and check your government's current advice.

Where are the best sunsets in Negril?

The West End cliffs face directly west and are the classic spot, with bars and cliff-top platforms. Seven Mile Beach also catches the sunset but with a flatter horizon and more beach traffic.
