Petra is an ancient city in southern Jordan, built by the Nabataeans, an Arab people who grew rich on the caravan trade. Its buildings were cut straight into sandstone cliffs with rose-colored bands that change color in the light. The usual way in is the Siq, a narrow gorge that opens onto the Treasury, the best-known carved facade at the site. Past it lie tombs, a theater, colonnaded streets and the Monastery, reached by a long climb of steps.
A trip built around history and walking suits Petra. One full day covers the main sights, and a second day lets you take the higher trails and the Monastery at a slower pace. Expect a lot of walking on uneven stone, and hot sun in summer. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for walking outdoors. Staying in Wadi Musa, the town at the site entrance, makes early starts simpler.

Read the guidePetra FAQ
How much is a ticket to Petra?
50 JD for one day, 55 JD for two and 60 JD for three if you stay overnight in Jordan. Same-day visitors pay 90 JD.
Is the Jordan Pass worth it for Petra?
Usually yes for stays of two nights or more. The pass costs 70–80 JD, includes Petra and waives the visa fee.
How many days do I need in Petra?
Two days lets you walk the main trail, climb to the Monastery and add the High Place of Sacrifice without rushing.
Can I visit Petra as a day trip?
Yes, from Amman or Aqaba, but it is a long day and a same-day ticket costs more. A night in Wadi Musa is easier.
What should I wear and carry in Petra?
Closed shoes with grip for the rock steps, a hat and more water than you expect. The Siq is flat and shaded; the Monastery climb is neither. Start early in summer, when afternoon heat turns the long trail into a slog.
