Lebanon

Lebanon packs Roman and Phoenician ruins, cedar forests and a Mediterranean coast into a small country, with Beirut as its capital.

Lebanon is a small country on the eastern Mediterranean coast of West Asia, with Beirut as its capital and largest city. Syria lies to the north and east, Israel to the south. Byblos is among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, and Sidon and Tyre were Phoenician port cities. Baalbek, known to the Romans as Heliopolis, has Roman temples. Inland, the Kadisha Valley is dotted with monasteries.

The Mount Lebanon range has ski runs in winter, and the Lebanon Mountain Trail links 76 towns and villages for hikers in summer. The trip suits people who want history, hiking and long meals out, and Zahlé is known for its mezze. Plan around the seasons: April to June and September to November are the best months, and a car is the most common way to get around. Check current government travel advice before you book, because the security situation has been highly volatile recently.

Five things to know before Lebanon

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

The UK advises against all travel to parts of Lebanon and all but essential travel to others (updated 10 August 2026); Canada advises avoiding all travel. Most insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Check your passport for Israeli stamps

You may be refused entry to Lebanon if your passport shows any sign of a visit to Israel, even with a valid visa. Check before you book a flight.

  3. Get the free visa on arrival at Beirut airport

British citizens can normally get a free single-entry tourist visa at Beirut airport, valid one month and extendable to three at General Security. Overstay fines are paid in Lebanese currency only. Beirut visa and entry

  4. Carry US dollars in cash

Lebanon's economic crisis can affect card payments. US dollars are the main cash currency, but they can be hard or expensive to get locally, so bring enough. Money and power cuts

  5. Check what your insurer will cover in writing

Insurance can be invalid where your government advises against travel, and consular support is severely limited. If you must go, get written confirmation of medical and evacuation cover. Travel insurance
