Byblos, also called Jbeil, is a coastal town about 40 kilometers north of Beirut. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world. Phoenician walls and Roman columns stand near the excavated site, and a Crusader castle sits on the hill above the harbor, built partly from older stone. Below it, a small fishing harbor and a narrow old souk lead to cafes and seafood restaurants on the water.

Most visitors come on a day trip from Beirut or stay a night on the coast. Plan at least half a day for the archaeological site, the castle and a walk through the old town, or a full day if you want to swim or eat slowly by the sea. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for walking the ruins. Summer is hot and humid, with warm sea swimming and busier weekends.

Byblos in five

  1. Agree the taxi fare from Beirut before you set offByblos is about an hour by car from Beirut, and longer at rush hour. Agree the fare and the drop-off point before you get in, since taxis often do not use a meter.
  2. Get WhatsApp and an eSIM before you arriveMany guesthouses, restaurants and drivers in Byblos answer on WhatsApp, so you need data from the moment you land. Set up a plan before you travel.Phones and eSIM
  3. Carry small US dollar notes for small shops and taxisUS dollars are widely used in Lebanon. Small shops and drivers may not have change for large notes, and card payments are not reliable everywhere, so keep some cash on you.
  4. Check castle and site hours on the dayThe Crusader castle and the archaeological site are the main sights. Opening hours can change, so check them locally before you walk up.Getting around
  5. Cover shoulders and knees for churches and mosquesChurches and mosques in the old town expect visitors to dress modestly, and mosques require shoes to be removed. Carry a light scarf or shawl for the day.

How do you get from Beirut to Byblos?
