Boquete is a small mountain town in Panama's Chiriquí Province, about 60 km from the Costa Rica border. It sits at roughly 1,200 m above sea level, on the Caldera River, in a valley surrounded by mountains. The height keeps it cooler than the Panamanian lowlands, and visitors come for the setting and the mild climate. Panamanian visitors, tourists and retirees from many countries come here.
Coffee growing is still the main economic activity, though tourism has grown strongly in recent years. Around town you can visit coffee farms and organic farms, try zip-lining or go birdwatching. Hikers come for Volcán Barú, an inactive volcano and Panama's highest point of land at 3,475 m. A guide helps you reach the summit. The Sendero de los Quetzales is a relatively easy route from Boquete over the volcano to Cerro Punta and Volcán on the other side. Trails can be remote and some run near cliffs, so plan routes carefully and check trail conditions and weather first.

Boquete FAQ
How many days do you need in Boquete?
Three days cover a coffee farm, a waterfall or hot springs and a rafting or climbing day. Add a fourth for Volcán Barú, which needs most of a day, or start before dawn.
How do you get from Panama City to Boquete?
Fly to David from Tocumen or Albrook, then take a taxi or car for about 50 minutes. By road it is about 6 hours to David on the Pan-American Highway plus about 1 more; buses from Albrook reach David in about 6 hours, where you change.
Is Boquete worth visiting?
Yes if you want cool mountain air, coffee farms, hiking and rafting instead of a beach. It suits three to four days and pairs well with Bocas del Toro, but it is far from Panama City by road.
Do you need a guide to hike Volcán Barú?
The tourism authority says you can go without one but does not recommend it, and the UK advice for the hills around Boquete points the same way. Book a guide or tour; the Barú guide covers the routes.
What is the weather like in Boquete?
Cool and varied: the tourism authority gives about 12 to 30 °C. The dry season brings clear days, while the green season brings afternoon rain and mist, so carry a rain shell year-round.
