Chiriquí Province

Chiriquí Province

Chiriquí offers cloud forest hikes, highland coffee farms and cooler mountain air than Panama's coast.

Chiriquí is Panama's western province, on the border with Costa Rica, and its capital is David. The province runs from Pacific beaches up to the slopes of Volcán Barú, the country's highest peak, at about 3,474 meters (11,398 feet). Boquete, a mountain town with cooler air and trails into cloud forest, is the main base for the highlands.

Coffee grows on shaded farms here, including the Geisha variety grown in Boquete. Birdwatchers look for the resplendent quetzal in the cloud forest. Hikes range from short walks to full-day routes up the volcano. The drier months, roughly December through April, suit most outdoor plans, though the highlands get rain at any time of year. Two or three days cover the highlands, with a day or two on the Pacific coast if you want beach time.

    Chiriquí Province FAQ

How many days do you need in Boquete?

Two or three days cover the coffee farms, a trail or Volcán Barú, and a day in David. One day works if you only want a single farm tour and a walk through town.

    Is Boquete worth visiting?

Yes, if you want cooler highland air, coffee farms and hiking. If you want beaches or city nightlife, it is the wrong base.

Where should I stay in Chiriquí?

Stay in Boquete for the mountains and farms. Stay in David if you need an early bus or flight, since it is the lowland hub with the airport and bus terminal.

When is the best time to visit Boquete?

The dry season, roughly December to April, has the clearest days for hiking. May to November is wetter, with the heaviest rain in the middle of that stretch.

Can you visit Boquete as a day trip from David?

Yes, the road is about an hour each way. That leaves time for one coffee farm and a short walk, but not a summit hike.

Do you need a guide for Volcán Barú?

Check whether the night climb requires a guide. Park rules come from MiAmbiente, so confirm them before you plan the hike.
