Belize is a small country on the Caribbean coast of Central America, with Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south. English is the official language. Many trips focus on the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, two offshore cayes, are common bases for snorkeling and diving. Inland, the Cayo District has the Maya sites of Caracol and Xunantunich, the latter near San Ignacio.
Choose Belize if you want reef and jungle on one itinerary. A week lets you cover the coast and the interior, while a shorter stay works if the reef is the main goal. The dry season, roughly December to May, is the easier window for boat trips and hiking. June to November is the rainy and hurricane season, so expect more rain and check conditions before you book boats.
Five things to know before Belize
- Check how long your entry stamp allows
Belize Immigration lists visa-free visits of up to 30 days, and a 30-day extension costs BZ$200. Complete the online declaration before you fly, then check your passport in the visa checker. Visa checker
- Take the water taxi to the cayes
Water taxis from Belize City reach Caye Caulker in about 45 minutes and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Small planes serve both islands too. Airport to water taxi
- Decide whether Belize City needs a night
A late landing or an early boat can justify one night near the terminal. Read the city's safety notes and the overnight-or-straight-on comparison before you book. Overnight or straight on?
- Fly south or plan a long road
Small planes link Belize City with Placencia, Dangriga for Hopkins, and Punta Gorda. Pick one coast base unless you have four nights or more. Placencia or Hopkins?
- Budget for the border exit fee
UK advice puts the departure tax at BZD 40 or USD 20 when you leave by land, or by water to Guatemala or Mexico. San Ignacio is the usual base for the Guatemala crossing. San Ignacio

Belize FAQ
Do I need a visa for Belize?
Not for up to 30 days with a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German or Spanish passport, per Belize Immigration; extending costs BZ$200 per 30 days. Passport validity differs by source: 3 months (UK, Spain) or 6 months (Canada, Germany), so plan for 6.
Can I pay in US dollars in Belize?
Yes, almost everywhere. Ask which currency a price is in, since both use the $ sign, and expect change in Belize dollars.
Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye?
Caye Caulker is smaller, cheaper and car-free. Ambergris Caye has San Pedro town, more restaurants and a wider range of places to stay.
When is the best time to visit Belize?
The water taxi operator suggests late November to April for dry days. Hurricane season runs June to November, per UK advice, so book flexible rates for those months.
Is English spoken in Belize?
Yes. English is the official language, and Kriol and Spanish are widely spoken too.
