San Ignacio is a town in western Belize, used by travelers as a base for exploring nearby Maya archaeological sites, caves and forested highlands. Guided trips are needed for some cave outings. The Mountain Pine Ridge area gives you a different setting from the forest around town. This destination suits travelers who want outdoor activities and Maya history and are comfortable taking day trips from one base.

Allow several days for excursions around San Ignacio so you do not have to fit every outing into a rushed schedule. The dry season, roughly December through April, is a common time to plan outdoor activities. Tikal is in Guatemala, across the border, and the journey takes several hours each way. Check border and transport arrangements before setting out. Buses connect San Ignacio with Belize City, so you can travel between the west and the country’s main city overland.
