The Sydney New Year's Eve guide
How the night works
The harbour is lit twice: at 9pm and at midnight. The 9pm show is family-friendly, and the midnight display rings in 2027. The City of Sydney produces both, and its site lists 48 vantage points around the harbour. The split is what matters for planning. 34 are free and unticketed. Four are free but need a ticket or a ballot: Bradleys Head, the Cahill Expressway, Strickland Estate and the Sydney Opera House forecourt. The other ten are paid.
Free does not mean easy. The free sites fill, and the official pages give gate rules for each. If you want to see both shows from the same place, pick a site where you can stay from the afternoon to midnight, and eat and drink there.
The free Royal Botanic Garden sites
Four of the free sites are lawns inside the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, open on 31 December from the morning. Entry is free and needs no pre-registration. Each site is self-contained, so you cannot walk between them once inside, and each closes to new entries once it reaches capacity.
Mrs Macquarie's Point
The largest of the four by a wide margin, with room for 10,000. It shares its gate with Fleet Steps, on Mrs Macquaries Road.
Tarpeian Lawn
A mid-sized lawn with its entrance on Macquarie Street. The garden warns that tree canopies may partly block some views from the sites.
Fleet Steps
Opens at the same time as Mrs Macquarie's Point, through the same gate, and holds 3,000 people.
Bennelong Lawn
The first to open and the smallest, with room for 1,000.
Licensed bars run from 11am to midnight. The sites have toilets, water refill stations, food, drinks and first aid, and no shelter or charging stations. An accessible viewing area is allocated by ballot, with 100 places and up to four people per booking.
The other free parks
Beyond the garden there are 30 more free sites, and the main thing that separates them is the alcohol rule.
Ten allow your own alcohol: Birchgrove Park, Elkington Park, Giba Park, Illoura Reserve, Lookes Avenue Reserve, Mort Bay Park, Pirrama Park, Simmons Point, Thornton Park and Yurulbin Park. Nineteen prohibit it: Campbells Cove, Circular Quay east and west, Cremorne Point, Darling Harbour, Dawes Point Park, Duff Reserve, Dumaresq Reserve, Embarkation Park, Hickson Road Reserve, Lavender Bay Parklands, Mary Booth Reserve, McKell Park, Murray Rose Pool and Blackburn Gardens, North Head, Observatory Hill Park, Rose Bay Foreshore, Upper Bradfield Park and Yarranabbe Park. Barangaroo Reserve sells alcohol but bans BYO.
Darling Harbour has its own fireworks at 9pm and midnight. Barangaroo Reserve, Pirrama Park, Mary Booth Reserve and Upper Bradfield Park have accessible viewing areas, as do the Botanic Garden lawns.
Free with a ticket, and paid spots
The Sydney Opera House forecourt is free, but you book. Tickets are available at 10am on 26 December 2026 through the Opera House. The Cahill Expressway is a free family event for NSW residents allocated by ballot, which went live at 9am on 3 September. Bradleys Head, Strickland Estate and Clark, Goat and Shark islands were listed as sold out. Strickland Estate's free tickets were valid for entry only between 5pm and 6pm, with general access after 6pm if the site was not full.
Of the paid sites, the official pages price two:
Taronga Zoo: ticket options from AUD 125 to AUD 1,000, on sale from 12pm on 10 September.
Royal Botanic Garden picnic: AUD 255 for Foundation and Friends members, AUD 315 for a member's guest, AUD 80 for a child aged 6 to 15, and free under 5.
Blues Point, Lower Bradfield Park, Luna Park (a Harbour Party), Dudley Page Reserve (tickets from 1 October) and Cockatoo Island are the others. Cockatoo Island's New Year's Eve access is limited to guests with a valid accommodation booking.
- No race for a free lawn
- A fixed entry and a place to sit
- Prices run from AUD 80 for a child's picnic ticket to AUD 1,000 at Taronga
Getting there
The Botanic Garden sites recommend public transport, and name Martin Place and St James as the nearest stations. Road closures around the harbour are extensive.
Where to sleep by area
The city centre puts you at Martin Place and St James for the garden sites, and Circular Quay east and west are free vantage points where alcohol is prohibited. Darling Harbour and Pyrmont have the Darling Harbour show at 9pm and midnight, with Barangaroo Reserve and Pirrama Park nearby. Balmain and Birchgrove hold three of the BYO-friendly parks. The north shore has Lavender Bay Parklands and Cremorne Point, both free, facing the city.
