Cambodia is a country in mainland Southeast Asia, bordered by Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, with a coast on the Gulf of Thailand. Angkor, near Siem Reap, was the centre of the Khmer Empire and is home to the Angkor Wat temple complex. Phnom Penh, the capital and largest city, is the country's political, economic and cultural centre. Its Tuol Sleng prison is now a memorial to the Khmer Rouge period.
The Khmer Empire flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries. On the southern coast, Sihanoukville is the main beach destination. Kampot and Kep are popular day trips from the Phnom Penh area. Kampot is known for its pepper, and Kep is known for crab shacks that serve crab with Kampot pepper. The dry season runs from November to April, and temperatures can reach about 40 °C around April. The rainy season runs from May to October.
Five things to know before Cambodia
- Get the e-Visa before you fly
UK citizens need a visa; check your own passport on the official site. Apply for the e-Visa at least 4 days before you travel, or buy a visa on arrival at airports and land borders. Check the fee on the e-Visa site. Cambodia e-Visa
- Submit the e-Arrival card within 7 days of flying in
Air arrivals at Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville complete the free Cambodia e-Arrival form online within 7 days before landing. It is separate from the visa. Cambodia e-Arrival
- Buy an Angkor pass for the days you need
Passes come as one day, three days within ten or seven days within a month, and carry your photo. Two to three days lets you see the big temples early and the far ones in the afternoon. Siem Reap
- Carry clean US dollars and some riel
Prices in towns are quoted in dollars, and change under a dollar comes back in riel. Torn or old notes are often refused, so bring crisp ones. Money on the road
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples
Angkor Wat's upper level and working pagodas turn away visitors in shorts or sleeveless tops. Pack a light scarf or trousers for temple days.

Cambodia FAQ
Do I need a visa for Cambodia?
UK citizens do; check your own passport on the official e-Visa site. Apply online at least 4 days before you travel, or buy a visa on arrival at airports and land borders. Air travelers also fill in the free e-Arrival card.
How many days do I need at Angkor?
Two to three days. One day covers Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm at a rush; a three-day pass adds Banteay Srei and the quieter outer temples.
Should I use dollars or riel in Cambodia?
Both. Most prices are in US dollars and ATMs usually dispense dollars; small change and street food come in riel. Bring clean, untorn notes.
When is the best time to visit Cambodia?
November to February is dry and at its coolest. March to May gets very hot, and the rains from June to October turn the countryside green but can flood roads.
How do I get from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh?
By bus in about five to six hours, or by a short domestic flight. Buses leave through the day from both towns.
