Battambang is the capital of Battambang province in northwestern Cambodia and the country's third largest city. It sits on the Sangkae River. Its French colonial core, with grid-pattern streets, canals and bridges from the early 1900s, is best explored on foot. People come for the food, which UNESCO recognized in October 2023 when it named the city a City of Gastronomy, and for an arts scene that includes galleries, workshops and the Phare Ponleu Selpak circus school.

Battambang suits travelers who want a quieter Cambodia than Siem Reap, which draws more international visitors. Main sights include the central Psar Nath market, a 1936 Art Deco building, Wat Damrei Sar, the oldest pagoda in the city, and the norry, a bamboo train that runs about four kilometers from Prasat Banan. The Phnom Sampeau killing caves, a former Khmer Rouge execution site, lie about six kilometers from the city. The cooler dry season, roughly November to February, is the most comfortable time for walking and cycling, since the city is very hot for much of the rest of the year.
