Thailand

Travelers come for Bangkok's temples and street food, the cooler hills of the north, and beaches on two coasts with dry seasons at different times.

Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia, with Bangkok as its capital and largest city. Bangkok is the usual starting point, known for its temples, street food and boats on the Chao Phraya River. Chiang Mai, in the north, is the base for trips into the hill country, where the air is cooler and the pace is slower. The country also has two island coasts: the Andaman side on the Andaman Sea, and the Gulf side on the Gulf of Thailand.

A first trip often pairs Bangkok with one more region, such as the north or a beach stay on one coast, since travel between them takes time. The Andaman side is driest from November to April. The Gulf side is wettest from about October to December, so the two coasts suit different months.

Five things to know before Thailand

  1. Fill in the TDAC before you land

Most Western passports get a 30-day visa-free stay from 15 September 2026. Submit the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card shortly before you fly and keep the confirmation on your phone. Thailand entry rules

  2. Pick the coast by season

The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) is driest from November to April. The Gulf (Koh Samui) gets its heaviest rain from October to December.

  3. Use trains and boats in Bangkok

Traffic makes taxis slow at rush hour. The BTS and MRT cover the center, and the Chao Phraya Express boat is the easy way to the old town. Bangkok

  4. Dress for the temples

Cover shoulders and knees at the Grand Palace and the big temples. Carry a light layer; they check at the gate.

  5. Take the night train north once

The sleeper from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Chiang Mai takes around 11 to 13 hours. The flight is about 1h15, but the train is the better story. Chiang Mai

Rules for Thailand, checked
Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival, and check the Thai immigration bureau website for the current form.
Check whether your nationality qualifies for visa exemption and how long you may stay, since the rules have changed; confirm with the Thai embassy or consulate.
Cover shoulders and knees and take off your shoes before entering a temple or shrine; some sites also check dress at the gate.
Electronic cigarettes are banned in Thailand, including import and possession; check your government's travel advice before packing one.
Insulting the monarchy is a serious crime under Thailand's lese majeste law, so avoid comments and jokes about the royal family, online and offline.

Thailand FAQ

How long can I stay in Thailand without a visa?

Most Western passports get 30 days visa-free from 15 September 2026, down from 60. Rules differ by nationality and have changed more than once, so check the Thai government site before you fly.

When is the rainy season?

In Bangkok and the north, roughly May to October. The Gulf islands get their heaviest rain later, from October to December.

How many days do I need?

Ten days covers Bangkok, Chiang Mai and one island. Two weeks lets you add a second coast or the old capitals at Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.

Which Thai island should I pick?

Choose by month: Phuket, Krabi and Ko Phi Phi from November to April, Koh Samui, Ko Pha-Ngan and Ko Tao for most of the rest. Pick the Gulf coast if you travel from May to September.

Do I need cash in Thailand?

ATMs are everywhere, but markets, small restaurants, songthaews and boat piers prefer baht in cash. Check your bank's foreign withdrawal fees, and carry small notes.
