Phuket Town is the old commercial center of Phuket, the large island off Thailand's southwest coast. Its historic core is a grid of Sino-Portuguese shophouses: narrow, two- and three-story buildings with arcaded fronts, built when tin mining and trade brought Chinese and Portuguese-influenced families to the island. Many have been restored and now hold cafés, guesthouses and small shops, so the old streets are easy to explore on foot.
Food is the main reason to visit. Thai-Chinese cooking with Hokkien roots is served in old shophouses, coffee shops and markets, and the Sunday walking market on Thalang Road fills the center with stalls. The town has no beach of its own, so it suits travelers who want to eat and walk more than swim. One or two days covers the old streets and a few meals. The dry season, roughly November to April, is the easiest time to walk outdoors.
Phuket Town in five
- Walk the Old Town in the morning or eveningThalang Road, Dibuk Road and Soi Romanee hold the best-preserved shophouses and shrines. Midday heat empties the streets, so start early or go after about 4pm.
- Check the Sunday evening street marketA weekly night market closes part of Thalang Road to traffic and fills it with food and craft stalls. Confirm it is running on your dates, since events can be moved or cancelled.
- Eat local noodles and dim sum for breakfastPhuket Town is known for Hokkien-style noodles, dim sum and coffee shops that open early and close by early afternoon. Go before the lunch rush.
- Plan around the Vegetarian FestivalA nine-day festival, usually in September or October, brings processions and street food to local shrines. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check the year's schedule; streets close and rooms fill.
- Sleep here only if you do not need a beachPatong, Kata and Karon are roughly 30–45 minutes away by road. Use the Old Town for a night of food and culture, then move to the coast.Hat Kata
