Patong is a beach town on the west coast of Phuket, the largest island in Thailand, in the Andaman Sea. Its bay is a long curve of sand, and the streets behind it hold restaurants, bars and hotels. Bangla Road, the best-known street for nightlife, runs through the town, so food, bars and the beach are all in one place.
Where you sleep matters most. Bangla Road is loud late at night, so a room further back suits anyone who wants quiet evenings, while a room near the street suits a late night out. The dry season, roughly November to April, has less rain and calmer seas on the west coast. For a calmer beach, look at other beaches on Phuket before you book.
Hat Patong in five
- Pick your street by how late you sleepBangla Road is loud until the early hours. Staying on the far side of the beach road or in the north gives you the same walk to the sand with fewer bars. Read recent reviews for noise.
- Agree taxi fares before you get inPatong taxi pricing is a common complaint. Use an app, a metered cab you insist on, or a pre-booked transfer, and avoid vehicles that will not name a price.
- Photograph a jet ski before you hire itDamage claims on rental jet skis are a well-known problem. Take dated photos or video of the machine, or skip the hire and book a boat trip with an established operator instead.
- Heed the lifeguard flagsThe beach has strong surf and rip currents in the monsoon months, roughly May to October. Red flags mean do not swim, and many drownings on Phuket happen on those days.
- Landing at Phuket? Sort your TDAC firstFile the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before your flight, and note that stays on the visa-exempt rule are now shorter than before, which matters for longer beach trips.Thailand entry rules

Read the guideHat Patong FAQ
Is Patong worth visiting?
Yes if you want nightlife, many restaurants and every service in one place. It is busy and commercial, so travelers who want quiet beaches do better in Kata, Khao Lak or on a smaller island.
Where is the best place to stay in Patong?
On or near the beach road for walking access, or in the northern end near Kalim if you want to sleep. Stay away from Bangla Road if you are a light sleeper.
Is Patong safe at night?
Mostly, but it has pickpockets, aggressive touts and scams around taxis, jet skis and drinks. Keep your phone and wallet close, watch your drink, and use ride apps or agree prices before you move.
Can you swim at Patong Beach?
In the dry season, yes. In the monsoon months the surf and rip currents are strong, and red flags mean do not swim. Use a pool or another sheltered beach on those days.
How many days do you need in Patong?
Three days for the beach and a boat tour. Five days let you add the old town and a second island day. Many travelers stay longer only to use Patong as a base.
