Beirut

Beirut is Lebanon's capital and largest city, on a peninsula at the midpoint of the country's Mediterranean coast. People have lived here for more than 5,000 years, and excavations downtown have uncovered Phoenician, Roman, Crusader and Ottoman remains stacked on top of one another. The Corniche, a 4.8 km seafront promenade running from Saint George Bay to the south of the city, is busy at all hours, and the Raouché Rocks lie offshore below a white limestone cliff.

Go for the history, the museums and an evening scene that runs late in Gemmayzeh and Hamra. The National Museum holds about 1,300 pieces from prehistory to the Mamluk period. October and April are the most pleasant months, with mild temperatures and light rain, while summer is hot and humid. The US and other countries have placed Lebanon on their travel warning lists, and Israeli strikes have hit Beirut since late September 2024, so check current official advice before you book.

Beirut FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Beirut right now?

Governments advise against it. The UK advises against all travel to listed areas of Beirut's southern suburbs and to much of Lebanon, and Canada says avoid all travel. Read both pages, and check your insurer's terms, before making any plans.

Do I need a visa for Beirut?

British citizens can normally get a free single-entry tourist visa on arrival at Beirut airport, valid one month, according to the UK. Other passports differ, so ask a Lebanese embassy before you plan anything.

Can I use my credit card in Beirut?

Sometimes. The UK says many companies do not accept cards and US dollars are the main cash currency, which can be hard to get locally. Canada says many stores take cards and that ATM withdrawals may be capped. Carry cash for the whole stay.

Is the road to Beirut airport open?

Canada says there are sporadic closures on roads to Rafic Hariri International Airport and that access can be unavailable for long periods. The UK excludes Route 51 to the airport from its list of warned Beirut areas.

Are taxis safe in Beirut?

The UK and Canada advise against shared or street-hailed taxis because of armed robberies. They say to use only taxis from recognized companies or ones your hotel arranges.
