Paraguay is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. Its capital, Asunción, sits on the Paraguay River and is where most trips begin. The country is known for its Jesuit mission ruins, built with Guaraní communities in the 1600s and 1700s, and for a culture in which Spanish and Guaraní are both spoken every day.
West of the river lies the Chaco, a dry lowland with few roads and long distances, which suits travelers who want wildlife and quiet rather than city life. Many people reach Paraguay on a side trip from Iguazú Falls. Plan a few days for Asunción and one or two mission sites. The cooler months, roughly April to September, are more comfortable than the hot summer.
Five things to know before Paraguay
- Get your passport stamped at the land border
Missing entry stamps lead to fines when you leave. Some bus drivers say you can sort immigration later in Asunción; you cannot, so get off and get stamped at the border. Visas and entry
- Check the visa rule for your passport
UK and Canadian passports need no visa for tourism, and the UK says visitors normally get 90 days on arrival. Check your own nationality and permitted stay on Paraguay's official immigration site.
- Visit the Jesuit missions from Encarnación
The UNESCO-listed ruins of Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue are a short drive from Encarnación, on the border with Argentina. Evening light tours run at Trinidad.
- Change money only at banks and bureaux
Street money changers and some airport counters risk counterfeit notes. ATMs in Asunción and Ciudad del Este take foreign cards. Money on the road
- Plan around the summer heat
From December to February Asunción regularly passes 33°C, and the Chaco is hotter. Travel in the cooler months from May to September if you can.
