Trinidad and Tobago is an island republic with its capital, Port of Spain, on Trinidad. Trinidad lies about 11 kilometers off the Venezuelan coast, so the country sits closer to South America than to the main Caribbean islands. The islands are known for African and Indian Caribbean cultures and as the birthplace of the steelpan. Calypso, soca, rapso and chutney music are part of everyday life. Tobago, the smaller island, covers about 300 square kilometers and has coral reefs for diving and snorkeling.
Trinidad suits travelers who want food, music and wildlife. Pitch Lake, the largest natural deposit of asphalt on Earth, is one of its best-known sights, and the country has 472 recorded bird species, including the scarlet ibis. Tobago suits beach and diving trips. The dry season runs from January to May, and the rainy season covers the other seven months. Plan several days on Trinidad and a few more on Tobago to see both islands. Ferries link Port of Spain with Scarborough in Tobago.
Five things to know before Trinidad & Tobago
- Complete the online arrival card
Since March 2026, Trinidad and Tobago has used an online arrival and departure card at travel.gov.tt. It opens 72 hours before travel; save the receipt with the QR code to show officials. Visas and entry
- Decide on Trinidad, Tobago or both
Trinidad has Carnival, the food scene and rainforest birding; Tobago has beaches and reefs. They are linked by a short domestic flight and a ferry.
- Book Carnival months ahead
Carnival Monday and Tuesday fall just before Ash Wednesday, so the date moves each year. Rooms, flights and costumes sell out months ahead.
- See nesting leatherbacks with a permit
Leatherback turtles nest on beaches such as Matura and Grande Riviere from about March to August. Protected beaches need a permit and a guide in nesting season.
- Declare cash over TT$20,000
Cash and payment instruments worth more than TT$20,000 in any currency must be declared on arrival and departure, and penalties apply if you do not.

Trinidad & Tobago FAQ
When is Trinidad Carnival?
Carnival Monday and Tuesday fall in the days before Ash Wednesday, so they land in February or early March depending on the year. Events build for weeks before.
Do I need a visa for Trinidad and Tobago?
UK and Canadian passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 90 days, with an onward or return ticket and proof of funds. Australians need an e-Visa. Complete the online arrival card before you fly; check other passports with the Immigration Division.
Does Trinidad and Tobago get hurricanes?
Rarely. The islands lie south of the main hurricane belt, though Tobago has been brushed by storms. The rainy season runs roughly June to December.
How do I get from Trinidad to Tobago?
Take a short domestic flight or the fast ferry between Port of Spain and Scarborough. Book ahead around Carnival and holidays.
Is Tobago better than Trinidad for a beach holiday?
Yes. Tobago has the calmer beaches and reefs; Trinidad is better for Carnival, food and birdwatching.
