Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest island, northeast of the mainland in the Caribbean Sea. It is about 40 km long and 1.6 km wide, with white coral sand along much of its coast and mangrove forest at its center. San Pedro Town is the island’s only town. Its eastern coast runs alongside the northernmost stretch of the Belize Barrier Reef, the world’s second-largest coral reef after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The reef and beaches are the island’s main attractions, and scuba diving is a key reason to visit. The Marco Gonzalez archaeological site is linked to the Maya coastal settlements and trade routes in the area.
San Pedro is a base for exploring the island, while smaller villages and resorts are spread across the rest of Ambergris Caye. Secret Beach lies north of town and combines a remote setting with developed amenities. Golf carts are the main form of powered transport. Reach the island by plane or helicopter from Belize City, or by fast sea ferry; a ferry also runs from Chetumal, Mexico. A small airstrip is served by Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Choose Ambergris Caye for reef and beach time, with San Pedro as a town base.

Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker?
Ambergris Caye has more hotels, restaurants and dive shops; Caye Caulker is smaller, cheaper and quieter. Both reach the reef easily.
How do I get to Ambergris Caye?
Take a water taxi from Belize City, about 1.5 hours, or a short flight to San Pedro from Belize City's international or municipal airport.
When is the best time to visit Ambergris Caye?
February to May is dry, with calm seas. September and October carry the highest storm risk.
Is Ambergris Caye worth it if I do not dive?
Yes. Snorkel trips to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley need no certification, and the rest of the island runs on beach bars, fishing charters and slow evenings. Pick Caye Caulker instead if you want the same reef for less.
Can I visit the Great Blue Hole from Ambergris Caye?
Yes, as a full-day boat trip with a dive or snorkel and reef stops. Divers need suitable certification and experience for the depth, so ask the operator. A flight over the Hole is the alternative, and sea conditions decide whether boats go.
