Cuenca is a city in the Andes of south-central Ecuador and the capital of Azuay province. It is the country's third most populous city, after Guayaquil and Quito. The historic centre is a grid of cobbled streets lined with colonial and Republican-era buildings, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1999. The city is often called the Athens of Ecuador for its architecture, arts and literature.

Most visitors stay in the compact historic area, which lies between the Tomebamba river and the streets Gran Colombia, General Torres and Hermano Miguel. Plan a few days for the old town, the New and Old cathedrals and the museums, then add one or two day trips: Cajas National Park, about 30 km west, for lagoons and trails, or the Inca ruins at Ingapirca, about 65 km away. The climate is mild and spring-like, but nights are cool, so pack layers. The drier season runs from May to September.

Cuenca FAQ

Is Cuenca worth visiting?

Yes, for two or three days. The old town is walkable and relaxed, and Cajas and Ingapirca make easy day trips.

Is Cuenca or Quito better?

Quito has more sights and flight links; Cuenca is calmer and easier on foot. Many trips see both, with a flight or bus between them.

How do I get from Cuenca to Guayaquil?

By bus through Cajas National Park in about 3.5–4 hours, or by shared van. Flights connect via Quito.

Does altitude affect visitors in Cuenca?

Cuenca is about 2,500 m, lower than Quito, but some travelers still feel it for a day. Cajas climbs to about 4,000 m, so take that hike slowly and drink water.

Are Panama hats really from Cuenca?

They are Ecuadorian toquilla straw hats. Cuenca has workshops and museums that show how they are woven and blocked, and it is a good place to buy one.
