Jeddah

Jeddah is a Red Sea port in western Saudi Arabia, known for the coral-stone merchant houses of Al-Balad and a long seafront promenade.

Al-Balad, the old merchant quarter, is the usual first stop in Jeddah. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its narrow streets run past tall houses built from coral stone. Many have carved wooden balconies called roshan that shade the windows. Traders have worked this district for centuries, and many old buildings now hold shops, cafes and small museums. Visitors come for the houses, the markets and the slow walk between them.

The Corniche follows the water, and the King Fahd Fountain, one of the tallest water jets in the world, rises from the sea nearby. Jeddah suits travelers who want architecture, walking and Hijazi food more than a beach holiday. The most comfortable months are roughly November to March, because summer heat and humidity are strong. Two to three days covers the old town and the waterfront at an easy pace.
