Philippines

Beaches, diving and island hopping across about 7,641 islands, with Spanish-era towns in northern Luzon.

The Philippines is an archipelago of about 7,641 islands in Southeast Asia, in the western Pacific Ocean, with Manila as the capital. The islands fall into three groups: Luzon in the north, the Visayas in the middle and Mindanao in the south. Spanish colonization began in 1565, and under Spanish rule many towns were built around a central plaza with a church. Vigan in Ilocos Sur still has streets of Hispanic-style houses, and 78.8 percent of Filipinos were Roman Catholic in the 2020 census.

Beaches and diving are the main draws. Boracay, Coron and El Nido in Palawan, Cebu, Siargao and Bohol are popular spots, and Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Moving between islands means ferries and domestic flights, so a short trip works best with a few islands. December to February is the cool dry season. About 19 typhoons occur in a typical year, usually from July to October, and eight or nine make landfall.

Five things to know before Philippines

  1. Register on eTravel within 72 hours before you land

Register on the free eTravel site within 72 hours before you land and keep the QR code to show at immigration. Some airlines will not let you board without it. Use only the official site. eTravel

  2. Carry proof of an onward or return flight

British and Canadian passports get up to 30 days visa-free. Officers and airlines may ask for proof of a ticket out, and your passport needs six months of validity. Check other passports with the Bureau of Immigration. Visas and entry

  3. Leave a spare day around island flights

Small planes and ferries between islands are the first to be cancelled in bad weather, especially from July to October. Do not book an island hop the day before your flight home. Getting around

  4. Budget for island environmental fees

El Nido, Coron and Boracay charge local environmental or entrance fees, and some lagoons limit daily visitors. Keep the receipts; you may be asked to show them more than once. Palawan

  5. Carry pesos for small islands

Cards work in Manila, Cebu and big resorts, but island guesthouses, tricycles and boat trips want cash. ATMs on small islands can run dry at weekends. Money on the road

Philippines FAQ

Do I need a visa for the Philippines?

British and Canadian passports get up to 30 days visa-free, with proof of onward travel and six months of passport validity. Check other passports with the Bureau of Immigration. All travelers register on the free eTravel site within 72 hours before arrival.

When is the best time to visit the Philippines?

December to April is the dry season across most of the country. Typhoons are most likely from about July to October, when flights and ferries to small islands are often cancelled.

How many islands can I see in two weeks?

Two or three, comfortably. For example Palawan plus Cebu or Siargao, with a flight between each; every transfer takes most of a day.

Is eTravel the same as a visa?

No. eTravel is a free online travel declaration and does not give permission to enter. That comes from your visa-free status or a visa.

Do I need cash in the Philippines?

Yes, outside cities and large resorts. Take pesos for boat tours, local fees, tricycles and small guesthouses, and withdraw in town before heading to a small island.
