Boracay is a resort island in Aklan province, Western Visayas, lying about 0.8 km off Panay's northwestern shore. It is roughly seven kilometers long and narrow through the middle. Most visitors come for White Beach on the west side, about 4 km of white sand lined with resorts, restaurants and shops and sheltered from the wind. Some also come for the nightlife.

Access is by boat across a narrow strait from Caticlan on Panay, and the Cagban jetty is the main entry and exit point most of the year. Bulabog Beach on the east side is the main windsurfing and kiteboarding area, with reef-protected water that also suits scuba diving. Amihan, roughly October to March, brings cool northeast winds and little rain. The peak season, from about Christmas through February, is when the water off White Beach is often glassy. Habagat, from about April to September, is hot and humid with frequent heavy rain, and tropical storms are most likely then.

Rules for Boracay, checked

  • Entry rules depend on your passport. Check the visa list and entry requirements with the Bureau of Immigration before you book.Source
  • Since the 2018 reopening, beach businesses are set back 30 meters from the waterline, and bonfires and beach vendors were cleared from the beachfront.
  • Say Boracay, not 'Bora'. Locals find the short form disrespectful, and the Malay municipal ordinance refuses business licenses that use it.
  • Dial 911 for police, fire or an ambulance.

Boracay FAQ

What fees do I pay to get to Boracay?

An environmental fee and a terminal fee at Caticlan jetty, plus the boat fare. Transfer packages often include them, so ask what is covered before you pay twice.

Which part of White Beach is best?

Station 1 has the widest, quietest sand; Station 2 has most of the restaurants and nightlife; Station 3 is quieter and cheaper.

When is the best time to visit Boracay?

January to April, when White Beach is calm. From June to October the southwest winds bring waves and rain, and the east side takes over.

Is Boracay worth visiting?

Yes for three or four beach days with sunset sails and easy food. Skip it if you want empty sand or a quiet island; Palawan or Siargao feel less built up.

How do I get to Boracay from Manila?

Fly to Caticlan in about an hour, then take a short tricycle to the jetty and a boat across. Kalibo flights are often cheaper but add a long road transfer.
