    Bahrain

Go to Bahrain for pearling history, an excavated fort and port site, and a compact capital, all on islands a short drive apart.

Bahrain is a small island kingdom in the Persian Gulf, linked to Saudi Arabia's eastern coast by the King Fahd Causeway. Manama, the capital, sits on the main island. Muharraq, the former royal capital, lies on a smaller island joined by a causeway, and Bahrain International Airport is also there.

Pearl diving shaped these islands for centuries, and the old pearling houses and lanes of Muharraq still show it. Qal'at al-Bahrain is an excavated fort and port site with settlement going back thousands of years. The Hawar Islands to the southwest are a protected nature area. Bahrain suits travelers who want history, local food and a compact city break. The cooler months, roughly November to March, are the most comfortable; summer is very hot and humid. Plan at least two or three days for the main sites.

Five things to know before Bahrain

    1. Check the regional travel advice before you book

Iranian strikes have hit several Gulf states since July 2026, and flights can be cancelled or airspace closed at short notice. Read the current UK or US advice and check what your insurance covers. UK travel advice

    2. Apply for an eVisa or get a visa on arrival

British citizens can apply for an eVisa online or get a visa on arrival, issued for two weeks. Your passport needs six months of validity. Check your own passport on Bahrain's official eVisa site. Visas and entry

    3. Walk the Pearling Path in Muharraq

The UNESCO-listed trail links merchant houses, a fort and old oyster beds in Muharraq, a short taxi ride from the airport. Go in the late afternoon, when the lanes are cooler.

    4. Carry a few dinars, but expect to tap a card

One dinar is worth more than two US dollars, so prices look small. Cards work in malls, hotels and most restaurants; keep some cash for souq stalls and taxis. Money on the road

    5. Avoid eating in public by day during Ramadan

Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public during daylight hours in Ramadan, including in a car. Opening hours shift, and the dates move about 11 days earlier each year.
