India

India rewards travelers who pick one or two regions, from the Taj Mahal and Rajasthan's forts to Kerala's backwaters and the Himalayan north.

India is the seventh-largest country by area and the most populous, in South Asia, with Pakistan to the west and China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north. It is a federal union of 28 states and 8 union territories. Its landscape runs from the Himalayas in the north to the Thar Desert in the west, the Deccan Plateau in the south, and a coastline of about 7,517 km. Most visitors come for the Taj Mahal, Mughal forts, Indus Valley ruins, classical dance and music, and the mix of religions and languages.

Plan India as one region per trip. The country is large, and rail is the main way to cover distance, so a route through Rajasthan, the Ganges towns or Kerala works better than trying to see everything. The best season for most of the north is winter, from December to March, when average temperatures are about 10 to 15°C. October and November are typically clear and calm in the north after the monsoon, which falls mostly from June to September. Two to three weeks covers one or two regions at a steady pace.

Five things to know before India

  1. Apply for the e-Visa on the official site

Most visitors need an e-Visa, applied for online before you fly. Use the Government of India portal only; agent sites charge more for the same form. India e-Visa guide

  2. Book trains early on IRCTC

Popular routes sell out weeks ahead in winter. Register on the official IRCTC site with your foreign number and book as soon as your dates are fixed. Getting around

  3. Go north between October and March

Rajasthan passes 40 °C in May and June, and the monsoon runs roughly June to September. Rajasthan

  4. Use app cabs or prepaid taxis

Uber and Ola work in the big cities. At airports, use the prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal; for auto rickshaws, agree the fare first.

  5. Carry small notes

Locals pay by UPI QR codes. As a visitor, carry small notes for rickshaws, tips and temples, and a card for hotels.

India FAQ

Do I need a visa for India?

Most visitors do. Many nationalities apply for an e-Visa online before flying; use only the Government of India portal, and read the e-Visa guide for the types and timing before you book flights.

What is the best time to visit India?

October to March for most of the north, when it is cool, dry and clear. Kerala and Goa suit about November to March. The monsoon runs roughly June to September, and inland India is very hot from April to June.

How many days do you need in India for a first trip?

Ten to fourteen days is enough for one region, such as Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, or Kerala with a beach stop. Trying three regions in two weeks means long train days and little time in each place.

Is Rajasthan or Kerala better for a first trip to India?

Rajasthan if you want forts, palaces and the classic train route from Delhi, best in winter. Kerala if you want a slower trip of backwaters, tea hills and food, best in the dry months from about December to March.

How far ahead should I book trains in India?

As soon as your dates are fixed on popular winter routes, since overnight AC berths between Rajasthan cities go first. Register on the official IRCTC site or app before you need a seat, then book directly there.
