Gujarat

Go for Ahmedabad's carved wooden houses and old lanes, then slow down on Diu, a small island with a Portuguese past and a quieter coast.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat's largest city, is the place to start for its old city: carved wooden houses called havelis, narrow lanes called pols, and mosques and temples built over several centuries. Gandhinagar is the state capital. Gujarat sits on India's west coast along the Arabian Sea, and it has a long trading history there. Much of the food is vegetarian, and the thali, a platter of small dishes, is a common lunch choice.

The state suits travelers who like heritage, markets and coastal towns, and it moves more slowly than the big cities of northern India. Diu is a small island off the Saurashtra peninsula. Portugal ruled it until 1961, and it still has old churches and fort walls alongside a calm beach atmosphere. The best time to visit is winter, roughly October to March, when days are cooler. Allow several days for Ahmedabad and a few more for Diu, since the island is a separate leg of the trip.

    Is alcohol allowed in Gujarat?

Gujarat restricts alcohol, and buying or drinking it needs a permit. Ask your hotel how it handles permits before you arrive.

How do you get from Ahmedabad to Diu?

By road, as a long drive or bus trip. Check current train and bus options on the transport page before you book, since schedules change.

Should I stay in Ahmedabad or Diu?
