Kansai is the region of western Japan built around Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. Kyoto was the imperial capital for more than a thousand years and has many Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, gardens and wooden townhouses. Nara, a short train ride away, was Japan's capital in the eighth century. Its Todai-ji temple houses a large bronze Buddha, and deer roam Nara Park. Osaka, the region's largest city, is known for its food and the neon-lit Dotonbori district. Kobe, on the coast, is known for its harbor and its beef.
Kansai suits a first trip to Japan or a return visit focused on food and history. Base yourself in Osaka or Kyoto and take day trips by train to the other cities. Spring brings cherry blossoms and autumn brings red and gold foliage, and the most popular temples get crowded in both seasons. Plan at least a week for the main cities and a day trip or two, and more if you want to slow down in Kyoto.
Kansai in five
- Base in Osaka or Kyoto, not bothKyoto is 15 minutes from Shin-Osaka by shinkansen and about 30 by JR special rapid, so one hotel serves both. Osaka wins on food and price; Kyoto wins on temples at opening.Where to stay in Kyoto
- Price your route before buying a passMost city-to-city fares here are a few hundred yen each way, so a pass rarely pays off. The old JR Kansai Area Pass stopped selling on 30 September 2026.Is a Kansai pass worth it?
- Match the airport train to your baseNankai runs from Kansai Airport to Namba in 35–45 minutes. The JR Haruka reaches Kyoto in roughly 75–80 minutes, so Kyoto hotels are an easy first night.
- Do Nara as a half day, not a stopThe deer park and Tōdai-ji take 4–6 hours from either city. Leave before 9am and you beat the tour groups.Nara day trip guide
- Book Kii Peninsula lodging months aheadKumano Kodo inns and Kōyasan temple lodgings are few. In spring and autumn they can fill about six months out.Kii Peninsula guide

Kansai FAQ
How many days do you need in Kansai?
Five to seven days covers Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe without rushing. Give Kyoto two days, Osaka two, and treat Nara and Kobe as half-day trips. Add two to four days for the Kii Peninsula.
Should I stay in Osaka or Kyoto?
Osaka for most trips: rooms usually cost less and the food and nightlife run later. Stay in Kyoto if temples at dawn are the reason you came. Either way, the other city is 15–30 minutes away by train.
Do I need a rail pass in Kansai?
Usually not. City-to-city fares are a few hundred yen each way, so most itineraries cost less on single tickets and an IC card. A pass helps only if you stack many long rides in two to four days.
Is Kansai a good base for Hiroshima?
It can be. Hiroshima is about 1.5–2 hours from Shin-Osaka by shinkansen, so it works as a long day trip, but an overnight is more comfortable and lets you add Miyajima.
When is the best time to visit Kansai?
Late March to early April for cherry blossom, and late October to November for autumn color. Both are busy, so book rooms early. June is rainy and August is hot and humid.
